Salzburg is a beautiful city in Austria and is easily reachable via Munich, Germany or Vienna, Austria.
The closest airport is Salzburg Airport, however I recommend flying into one of the larger nearby airports, such as Zurich, Munich, or Vienna and then taking a train over to Salzburg. This also allows you the ability to visit more than one city!
Salzburg’s Main Train Station is a quick 15 minute bus ride from the city center. Use google map’s public transportation option to find which bus and timing works best for you!

As mentioned above, if you are into the Sound of Music, Salzburg is the place to visit! The 1965 movie was filmed in and around Salzburg, and you can visit all the actual filming locations! Below I’ve listed the filming locations that you can visit. Or do it the easier way and take the Sound of Music Tour!
The Mirabell Gardens are beautiful public gardens in Salzburg full of flowers and beautifully manicured hedges and fountains. It is also where Do-Re-Mi was filmed in the Sound of Music!
Nonnberg Abbey is where Maria’s journey starts in the Sound of Music and is right next to Fortress Hohensalzburg, at the top of the hill.
The Sound of Music Trapp Villa is the front of the house that was used for the filming of the Sound of Music. You can drive by and view the front of the house, but it is private property and can only be entered if staying there.
The back of the house used in the filming of the Sound of Music is Schloss Leopoldskron. It is now a hotel, so you can stay there by booking a room! Or walk around the lake opposite the house and get an amazing view of it from the back Read more about the history of the house in the movie here.
The famous Sound of Music Gazebo has been moved to Hellbrunn Palace. But you can still visit it there!
